Learn To Surf @ Westward Ho!

Surf Lesson 1.jpg

Why choose Ho! Surf / SurfSUP Academy to learn to surf?
We’re based right in the centre of Westward Ho!, on the village green — just 30 metres from the sea. From our shop window, we can see the whole beach, giving us a perfect view of the conditions. Surrounded by great cafés, restaurants, bars, and independent shops, it’s easy to turn your surf lesson into a full day out — or better yet, make learning to surf the highlight of your holiday.

To find places to stay, eat out, and explore while you're here, check out the village website: www.visitwestwardho.co.uk

Our instructors are trained, certified, and — most importantly — passionate about surfing.
They all hold current beach lifeguard qualifications and are active members of the local surf community. Our goal is simple: to help you have the best possible time, while staying safe and making unforgettable memories in the waves.

Westward Ho! offers around two miles of sandy beach, making it one of the most accessible and beginner-friendly surf spots in Devon.
With very few rip currents or underwater hazards, it’s a safe and inviting place to get to grips with the sport. The waves roll in gently thanks to the shape of the beach, reforming as they travel — creating consistent, slightly less powerful waves that are ideal for learning.
As your skills improve, you can paddle out further to catch more powerful waves. And once you’re confident, there are some fantastic surf spots in the area to explore. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a seasoned pro, Westward Ho! has something for everyone.

What To Expect?

Surf Lessons at Ho! Surf / SurfSUP Academy
All of our lessons are 2 hours long — the perfect amount of time to learn, have fun, and avoid getting too tired or cold. It’s all about making the experience enjoyable from start to finish.
Your session begins at the shop, where we’ll introduce you to your instructor and get you kitted out with a quality wetsuit. You’ll change in our on-site changing rooms and leave your clothes safely with us. After a quick safety briefing and board allocation, we’ll head to the village green or beach to go over conditions, safety tips, and what to expect in the water.
Then it’s time to hit the waves — where we’ll help you get up and riding, and hopefully leave you with a smile that lasts for days!
By the end of the session, you’ll be tired, happy, and ready to take on anything.
Please note:
If there’s no surf or the conditions are too wild to be safe, we won’t run the lesson. In that case, we’ll either rebook your session or offer a full refund — your safety always comes first.
